Our Team

Donna Barwick, CPA, CGMA

Founder & Principal Accountant

Donna Barwick has been in public accounting since 1986 – back when shoulder pads were big, spreadsheets were printed, phones had cords, and “clouds” were just things in the sky. A licensed CPA since 1988 and a Certified Global Management Accountant (CGMA), she’s also a proud University of Richmond alum with a BS in accounting. Translation: numbers have been her love language for a while.

As the founder of Barwick and Associates, Donna has spent 29 of her 39 years in public accounting as a business owner, mentor, caring professional advisor, and spreadsheet sorceress. She’s a dedicated educator to both staff and clients, because let’s be honest — financial literacy should not be more confusing than assembling IKEA furniture. Her current firm is celebrating 10 years of balancing books, building client trust, and occasionally explaining that “miscellaneous expense” is not a life-plan..

She also happens to be a QuickBooks ProAdvisor, which means she speaks fluent “software panic” and can rescue a balance sheet faster than you can say “why doesn’t this reconcile?!” Cleaning up a Chart of Accounts that is scarier than a haunted house? Please—she does that before her morning coffee!

When she’s not living her best CPA life (yes, she openly calls it her “accounting hobby”, don’t judge), you’ll find her traveling or reading a good book at the beach. But her greatest joy? Being “Tutu” to her three grandkids– the most elite title of all! They may not realize yet that their grandmother is both a financial ninja and low-key tax season warrior, but give it time.

Educator, entrepreneur, number whisperer, and spreadsheet enthusiast, Donna is equal parts number nerd, boss lady, and Tutu with a big heart. She’s living proof that accounting can be both a science and a party—just maybe not at the same time!

Erin Slaughter

Senior Staff Accountant

Erin Slaughter started her career in public accounting back in 1994 — which means she’s been crunching numbers since before some of her coworkers could even count on their fingers.She joined Donna in 2009 and has been holding the place together with spreadsheets, sarcasm, and a calculator that probably qualifies as vintage tech.
Armed with a Bachelor’s in Accounting, a Master’s in Finance, and enough caffeine to fuel a small city, Erin can turn chaos into clean books faster than you can say “extension deadline.” Her specialties include bookkeeping, tax preparation, and politely (read: relentlessly) reminding clients and coworkers that yes, deadlines are real.
Known for her sharp eye, dry wit, and uncanny ability to stay calm during tax season (thank you, coffee and who-dun-it videos), Erin is basically the Sherlock Holmes of spreadsheets—minus the pipe, plus a lot more Excel tabs.
When she’s not balancing books, you can find her basking in the sunshine, curled up with a good novel, line dancing like nobody’s watching, target shooting with unnerving accuracy, or laughing with friends who know better than to ask her for “just a quick favor with their taxes.”

Steve Chapel

Senior Tax Specialist

Steve Chapel has been with Barwick and Associates since the firm opened its doors and has worked alongside Donna for over 25 years. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Virginia Commonwealth University and is an Enrolled Agent with the IRS.
Steve specializes in estate and trust taxation, bringing decades of expertise and a deep understanding of these complex areas to the team. Known for his sharp wit and sense of humor, Steve keeps the office atmosphere light — and as the only guy in the office, he takes his role as both tax expert and unofficial comic relief seriously. His hobbies? Let’s just say they’re classified for everyone’s safety.

Lindsay Alkac

Staff Accountant

Meet Lindsay Alkac — our resident spreadsheet superstar and multitasking marvel! With an associate degree in Accounting and a shiny certification in Microsoft Excel for Accounting (courtesy of Wiley Finance), Lindsay is also a commissioned Notary Public — which basically means she can make your documents official and do it with style. She’s currently on a quest to conquer her Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, with the finish line set for Spring 2027.
Lindsay joined the firm in March 2023 and has been a steady, reliable presence ever since. Her main role is Payroll Processor, but she also supports the team with tax returns, monthly accounting, and whatever else needs to get done—including fixing the occasional tech issue.
Clients love Lindsay’s superpower: staying calm and organized no matter how wild the workday gets. She’s quick on her feet but never too rushed to really listen, explain complicated stuff without jargon, and make sure everyone feels supported — even when the tax codes try to throw curveballs.
When she’s not crunching numbers, Lindsay’s probably lost in a good fiction novel, battling bosses in video games, or refereeing the antics of her husband and two teenage boys. She’s also the proud dog mom of two gentle giants.

Jessica Mabie

Staff Accountant

Jessica Mabie is the numbers ninja at Barwick & Associates P.C., specializing in payroll wizardry, monthly accounting magic, and the delicate art of tax return preparation—for both people and businesses. Since diving into the world of accounting in 2018, Jessica has become a tax planning guru for small businesses, helping clients survive the financial jungle with accuracy, insight, and a dash of charm.
Armed with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (because math was never scary enough), Jessica prides herself on her laser-sharp attention to detail and her ability to keep calm while her calculator smokes. She’s a team player who believes collaboration is key—mainly because it’s more fun to celebrate tax season victories together.
When she’s not taming spreadsheets or decoding tax code hieroglyphics, Jessica is a proud mom of two energetic little humans and an outdoor adventure enthusiast. She’s mastered the art of balancing spreadsheets and family chaos, proving that multitasking is just a fancy word for “making it look easy.”

Ashlee Cook

Educational Consultant

Ashlee Cook is an experienced Educational Consultant with over 15 years of dedication to early childhood education, particularly within Montessori environments such as Primrose and Goddard Schools. Known affectionately by her peers as the “Toddler Whisperer,” Ashlee has a remarkable talent for helping neurodivergent toddlers thrive in nurturing, structured settings.
In 2019, she transitioned into full-time consulting, supporting families seeking alternative educational paths during uncertain times. Her expertise lies in working with two-year-olds, where her intuitive approach and deep understanding of child development have made her a trusted resource for both parents and educators.
Ashlee holds an Associate’s degree in Early Childhood Education and is a certified Child Development Associate (CDA). She began her educational journey with a dual diploma in cosmetology, graduating high school in 2009, and later attended Alabama A&M University and Georgia State University.
Beyond the classroom, Ashlee enjoys using her cosmetology skills to pamper family and friends, exploring holistic medicine, crafting vegan versions of her favorite meals, and decorating her home with vibrant plant life. A proud Petersburg native raised in Northern Virginia, she’s known for her warmth, reliability, and unwavering support to those around her.

Katherine Maphis

Office Manager

Office chaos whisperer, candy dealer, and proud pickle enthusiast.

Katherine Maphis has been keeping Barwick & Associates running smoothly for over a year as Office Manager- which basically means she’s part problem solver, part organizer, and part miracle worker. She loves getting to know each of our clients and making sure their experience with the firm feels both professional and personal. She will not only greet you with a smile but probably hand you some candy, too.

When she’s not at the office, Katherine is busy being the world’s coolest aunt to her five nieces and nephews (her biggest fans). She’s also known to quote Gilmore Girls on command and never says no to a pickle!
